COWES ROUND THE ISLAND RACE, ISLE OF WIGHT
Annual event, usually held on the last Saturday in June. The
largest annual yacht race of its kind in the world. 1830 boats and 16,000 keen
sailors. Olympic medallists and round-the-world skippers mix with first timers
and family cruisers to complete the 50 nautical mile course round the Isle of
Wight. Fri-Sat Regatta Village in Cowes Yacht Haven off Cowes High Street - free
of charge to everyone and an ideal place to enjoy a drink and soak up the
atmosphere. There are plenty of activities going on in the Regatta Village,
suitable for all age groups, and in the evening a full programme of live
entertainment. Cowes Esplanade provides a good view of the racing. Staggered
start 06:00-07:40 Cowes westwards past the Beaulieu River, Newtown and Lymington
before leaving the Solent through Hurst Narrows. Here the Island and mainland
are close. On the mainland you can walk down the shingle bank from Keyhaven to
Hurst Castle or on the Island watch from Yarmouth, Fort Victoria Country Park or
Alum Bay. Based on the 2008 times - viewing points:
Cowes start 0600-0740, Sconce
Point 0730-1000, The Needles 0800-1030, St Catherine's Point 0930-1330, Ventnor
0945-1400, Bonchurch 1000-1430, Culver Down 1030-1600, Ryde Pier 1130-1730.
