CHEESE ROLLING RACES, BROCKWORTH, GLOUCESTER
Annual events held on the Monday of the Spring Bank Holiday, late in May. Foolhardy souls cartwheel down Coopers Hill, south of Brockworth, in persuit of a 7lb cheese. Broken bones optional. 5 downhill & 4 uphill races. Start time 12:00. The slope has a gradient that is in places 1-in-2 and in others 1-in-1, its surface is very rough and uneven and it is almost impossible to remain on foot for the descent. No advanced booking for competitors, just turn up, but be warned that the risk of injury is high, even for spectators!. Free entrance, but parking charge and charity collections. The hill is visible from the A46, and the car park is sign posted. Why not enjoy a whole day at the Coopers Hill Nature reserve, or drive on to the Tetbury Wool Sack Races. St John Ambulance volunteers will be on hand to deal with injuries, which usually include cuts, bruises, broken bones and dislocations. Competitors from all over the world take part in the competition. Visitors come from as far as New Zealand. Pictures taken 28 May, 2007.
