THE BOAT RACE
Annual race between the elite rowing teams of Oxford and Cambridge. The record for the two 62ft boats on the 4 mile course is a little over 16 minutes. Huge crowds of 250,000 line the banks of the Thames between Putney and Mortlake, London, giving the event a festive atmosphere. There are giant viewing screens at Bishops Park Putney and Furnival Gardens Hammersmith - the half way point. Riverside pubs have their busiest time of the year and often offer TV coverage of the race. Pictures 03 Apr 2010.
